LORENZO
HOUSE LIVING HISTORY
An Event Hosted by the 149th NYSV, “The Salt Point Rangers”
September 12,13,14, 2003

It’s November of 1864. The 149th NYSV is in Georgia, and is now embarked on Sherman’s March to the Sea. The regiment is part of Slocum’s left wing, which is referred to now as Sherman's Army of Georgia. The 149th is marching between 10 and 15 miles per day towards Savannah, and helping to cut a 60 mile wide swath of destruction and is as Sherman said, “making Georgia howl”. They meet little resistance, except for occasional skirmishes with Home Guards or squads of partisan rangers. Frantic proclamations with calls "To Arms" are made by Beauregard, Senator B. H. Hill, and others. Bodies of state militia under the command of Generals McLaws, Cobb, and G.W. Smith are present, but little fighting takes place except near river crossings or the outskirts of towns.

passages from “SLOCUM AND HIS MEN”, published by J.B. Lyon Company, 1904).
Thus is the
setting for our Living History encampment at Historic Lorenzo.
